I am sure everybody has heard the word “swag” sometime in their life. But, what is the definition of swag? Several years ago the term swag was referred to as “loot” which could have been obtained either legally or illegally. It just depended on how it was used. It wasn’t until the early 60s that swag was used to describe promotional items. For example, swag was everything from promotional records sent to radio stations to free slippers for airline passengers.
In current times, it is understood that swag is something that is given to businesses to help them promote their line, purchased by businesses for resale within their line and/or for businesses to bring attention to what they have to offer. The use of swag varies tremendously.
The promotional products business is a multi-billion dollar enterprise. That’s kind of hard to believe if you have only the thought of promoting pencils, drinkware, etc. It is this misunderstanding of what promotional products are that stops a business from using these products in the first place. A promotional product’s dealer is not a huckster or a carnival barker. Most are true business people who offer a valuable service.
A little story. I was in Park City, Utah on vacation when my wife and I stopped in a little restaurant on the main drag. I noticed that almost the entire store was in the “bovine” motif. There were so many items available that was cow related. I also noticed, that there were things that she didn’t have that I could provide. I talked to the manager, a young girl, who happened to be the owner’s daughter. I obtained her contact information and said I would like to talk to her later to which she agreed. When I returned home, I contacted her but was always put off. On the last follow-up call I made to her, her mother got on the phone and told me to “take my pencils and don’t bother them again.” I honored that request but couldn’t believe how shortsighted she was. This was a pure fact that she had no real knowledge about promotional items or how and why they work.
I would invite any business that may be interested in furthering their business footprint to reach out and contact a promotional product’s supplier. Personally, I would be glad to answer any question you may have regarding promotional product usage and how it would be a benefit.
